How to Distinguish Real vs. Fake Cedar Wood? Starting with the Core Material of Cedar Hangers

Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative

As a factory specializing in cedar hangers, we’re often asked: “How can I tell if cedar wood is real?” In fact, the authenticity of cedar wood can be judged by its natural characteristics and core quality. Combining our standards for raw material control during production, here are some practical methods:

1. Check the Appearance: Natural Grain is the “ID Card”

Genuine cedar (such as the American Cedar we use) typically ranges in color from light yellow to light reddish-brown, with clear, fine grain—mostly straight or slightly wavy. The texture is uniform and has a natural luster—this is the natural texture we intentionally preserve in our cedar hangers.

Fake cedar, on the other hand, is often made by dyeing other types of wood. Its color is either unnaturally dull or rigid, with obvious traces of artificial coloring. The grain is rough and messy, lacking the warm feel of natural wood entirely.

2. Smell the Aroma: Natural Fragrance is the “Security Code”

The most distinctive feature of cedar wood is its fresh, 淡雅 natural scent (similar to a light pine aroma with a hint of sweetness). This scent comes from natural essential oils like thujone, which is also why cedar hangers can repel insects, resist mildew, and prevent moisture—our products retain this natural fragrance from raw material to finished product.
In contrast, fake cedar either has no scent at all or emits a pungent smell of chemical fragrances, mildew, or paint. The odor is unnatural and fades quickly, and it certainly can’t protect clothes naturally.

3. Test the Properties: Material and Function Don’t “Lie”

Real cedar is hard and has good load-bearing capacity (perfect for hanging suits, coats, and other heavy items), while being moderately weighted—never too bulky. Fake wood, however, is either too soft and easy to deform or excessively heavy and hard, failing to match the physical properties of cedar.
What’s more, the natural aroma of real cedar works long-term to repel insects and resist moisture—this is a core advantage that counterfeits can never replicate.

Our factory’s cedar hangers always use natural cedar wood as the core material, ensuring its natural grain, fragrance, and functionality from the source. With these methods, you can easily distinguish real cedar and choose products that truly protect your clothes~
